Course Code: CE401
Course Name: - DESIGN OF STEEL STRUCTURES
Max. Marks: 100 Duration: 3 Hours
IS 800-2007, IS 875-Part 1, 2, 3, IS 883, SP-6, Steel Tables permitted.
State and Assume suitable data wherever necessary.
PART A
Answer any two full questions, each carries 15 marks. Marks
1 a) Explain the different structural steel sections available in the market? (5)
b) Calculate the strength of a double cover butt joint connecting two main plate of (10)
width 160mm and thickness 12mm each and cover plates of thickness 8mm each.
Take pitch 40mm and end distance 30mm.Use M20 type bolt of grade 4.6.
2 a) Explain the procedure to determine the tensile strength of an Indian Standard (7)
Angle Section carrying tension force connected to a gusset plate
0) Find tensile strength of a plate 150x12 mm connected by 4 bolts in the same line (8)
using M20 bolts at a pitch of 50mm and end distance of 40mm. Take fy =250mpa
and f, =410mpa.
3 2) What are the advantages and disadvantages of welded joints? (3)
b) Design an angle section tension member connected on either side of a gusset plate (12)
of thickness 12mm to carry a working load of 200KN. Use M20 bolt of grade 4.6
and use field connection.
PART B
Answer any two full questions, each carries 15 marks.
4 a) Design a built-up column and lacing system consisting of two channels placed toe (15)
to toe to carry an axial factored load of 10001. Length of the column is 5m and
the column is restrained in position and direction at both ends. Use steel of grade
Fe 410.
5 a) An ISLB 200 @194.2 N/m is used as a simply supported beam over an effective (10)
span of 4m. Determine safe uniform load the beam can carry in flexure if
compressive flange of beam is laterally supported.
b) Difference between laterally restrained and laterally unrestrained beam? (5)
