26. Read Judy Brady’s account from “Why I want a Wife”. What are the particular roles a woman as
wife is compelled to perform ? Can we say that this account written half a century ago in 1971 still
defines a wife and mother ? How far are women able to go beyond the roles patriarchy imposed on
them ? What does a husband really want, a companion or a slave ? How does the writer create such

powerfully ironic effect ?

I want a wife who will take care of the details of my social life. When my wife and I are
invited out by my friends, I want a wife who will take care of the baby sitting arrangements.
When I meet people at school that I like and want to entertain, I want a wife who will
have the house clean, will prepare a special meal, serve it to me and my friends, and not

interrupt when I talk about things that interest me and my friends.

27. Read the lines given below from Hong Kingston’s story and explain what happened to the aunt in

“No Name Woman” and how it is passed on as a warming to the daughter.

“Don’t let your father know that I told you. He denies her. Now that you have started to

menstruate, what happened to her could happen to you”.
