0.1 mm and density 2600 kg/m*. At approximately what mass rate of flow per unit
area of bed (a) fluidisation, and (b) transport of particles will occur?
Given : porosity at minimum fluidisation = 0.48
PART 13
Answer any two questions. Each question carries 15 marks
Explain the working of any two types of positive displacement pumps with neat
diagrams
Define net positive suction head and required net positive suction head, and explain
how these two quantities are used to ensure that cavitation does not occur in a
pump.
An air compressor increases the pressure and the density of air passing through it.
If the inlet and outlet diameters are equal, how does average air speed change
across the compressor? In particular, is the outlet velocity less than, equal to or
greater than inlet velocity?
“Multistage compression with inter stage cooling is preferable over single stage
compression” Justify the statement.
Is it possible to accelerate a fluid to supersonic velocities with a velocity other than
the sonic velocity at the nozzle throat? Explain.
Derive Bernoulli’s equation for compressible fluid under adiabatic conditions.
Carbon dioxide flows steadily through a varying cross sectional area duct such as a
nozzle at a mass flow rate of 3 kg/s. 11 enters the duct at a pressure of 1400 kPa
and 200°C with a low velocity, and it expands in the nozzle to an exit pressure of
200 kPa. The duct is designed so that the flow can be approximated as isentropic.
Determine the density, velocity, flow area and mach no at the nozzle throat and exit
of the duct. Given y = 1.289, Cp = 0.846 kJ /kg k for (02.
PART C
Answer any two questions. Each question carries 20 marks.
Calculate the theoretical power for a six - blade flat turbine agitator with diameter
Da = 3m running at a speed of 0.2 rev/s. The liquid in the tank has a dynamic
viscosity 1 Pas and density 1000 kg/m? . The power number and Reynolds number
data for the tank is given in the table
